Program Overview:
The Center for SCI Recovery, is one of the first hospital-based programs
of its kind in the U.S., to provide a long-term, high-intensity, non-tradtional,
activity-based therapy program that utilizes innovative exercise techniques to
optimize recovery.
The program incorporates therapeutic techniques based on the newest
information available from emerging research around the globe. Our experienced
team will work one-on-one with the client to develop a creative individual
therapeutic exercise program, aimed at improving movement and function. The
therapy program includes
- Stimulation of the nervous system using closed kinetic chain exercise to
promote motor and sensory recovery
- Exercise of muscles above and below the level of injury
- Closed chain/weight-bearing exercise
- Intense sensory stimulation
- Intense trunk muscle training for posture and balance
- Body weight supported, assisted treadmill walking
- Biofeedback
- Hand therapy (optional)
- Massage (optional)
- Aquatic therapy (optional)
The emphasis moves beyond traditional rehabilitation techniques to encourage
activation of muscles and nerves below the level of injury. Emphasis is also
placed on improving coordination of limbs and trunk in conjunction with total
body exercise.
Clients work with a variety of rehabilitation professionals including
physicians, physical therapists, and trainers. Clients participate in the
exercise program for 3-hour sessions, 3-5 times per week.
