Surgeries
There has been a great deal of media attention regarding stem cell grafts and
other surgical interventions to promote neurological recovery in persons with
spinal cord injury. Although the science is promising, these surgeries remain
experimental in nature and are not approved by the US Food and Drug
Administration. Therefore, the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan does not
endorse any of these experimental procedures.
The
Center for SCI Recovery® does, however offer intensive
pre and post-surgical therapy for patients who have elected to pursue surgical
options overseas. The Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery® at Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is a world-class facility
designed to implement and study the results of innovative treatments that may
result in some level of improvement in persons with injured or damaged spinal
cords.
